IT HAPPENS everyday–you wake up in the morning and help yourself to a bowl of cereal. But did you ever stop to consider exactly how much you’re pouring? If you have pancakes instead, how many should you eat?
For many people, portion size is determined by their eyes or their stomachs–or both. They might put as much food on their plates as they think they want, and then eat it because it’s there. Or they might decide to put their forks down only once they begin to feel full. But that’s not the healthiest way to determine portion sizes.
Serving Size vs. Portion Size
How do you know what the right portion size is? The nutritional information on the package is a good place to start. It shows “the amount of nutrients associated with a given amount of food,” explains Tandalayo Kidd, assistant professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University in Manhattan. But of course, the serving size on the label is standard, while everyone’s chosen portion size will be somewhat different. In other words, the serving size suggested on the package may not be the same amount you actually consume.
For example, the package of chips you pick up on the way home from school may contain three 1-ounce servings. But if you wolf down the whole bag, that’s one portion, as determined by you. Eat until you’re full and you may actually be consuming multiple servings.
Without a nutrition label, it can be hard to tell exactly how much food is the right amount. When you have a slice of lasagna at your grandma’s house or a dish of ice cream at a holiday party, how do you know whether you’re eating a healthy portion size–or going overboard? Nutritionists have come up with ways to figure out portion size at a glance. (See “A Healthy Portion Looks Like …”) Those guidelines won’t give you the precise right amount for every food, but they should provide a rough estimate.
Whether you prefer hip-hop, country, rock, jazz, classical, or some other type of music (or all of them!), you’ve probably noticed how a favorite song can pick you up when you feel low.
Now imagine you have a serious health problem. Could a good tune improve your mood? Leora Friedman, 17, thinks so. Through her Music is Medicine program, children treated at Sinai Hospital’s Hackerman-Patz House in Baltimore and the Ronald McDonald House can learn about songwriting and help put together their own CDs. Last year, Leora, who lives in Baltimore, won a Key Change Grant from the GRAMMY Foundation and Do Something for the program, which she hopes to expand.
CH: How did you decide to bring music to sick kids?
Leora: I have been playing guitar and singing since I was 10. My sister and I wanted to find a way to use our passion for music to help others. So we started a songwriting program at the Hackerman-Patz House [in] the summer of 2008. We introduced our project with a concert and donated instruments to the playroom. The following week, we held a songwriting workshop, and the kids actually made the artwork for the CD. It was so great to be able to give the kids a chance to express themselves through music.
CH: What were the songs like?
Leora: They ranged from serious topics, such as missing home and friends, to fun lyrics about dolphins and robots. Some titles included “Is There Love Out There?” “A Friend Like You;’ and “You’re Amazing.”
What’s your attitude toward healthy eating? Confused by media reports with conflicting information? Concerned but don’t want to give up favorite foods? Think healthful foods are boring? Or maybe you think you do eat a healthful diet. Whatever your nutrition attitude, you can make the Food Guide Pyramid work for you.
You’re a member of this group if you try to eat as healthfully as possible. You study food labels and read nutrition articles. Here are some special tips for you:
* Plan meals from the base of the Pyramid up. Start with a grain–pasta or rice, for example–and add one or two vegetables. Next, choose a protein food such as meat, poultry, fish, beans, or eggs. Finish with a fruit or yogurt.
* Size up combination foods according to food groups. Your favorite pizza probably has ingredients from the bread group (crust), vegetable group (tomato sauce, onions, mushrooms), milk group (cheese), and maybe the meat group.
* When reading labels, check out the serving size. Different products in the same category can have very different portion sizes. For example, a serving of granola might be only 1/4 cup, while a serving of a puffed cereal may be as much as 2 cups.
* Look for more than just fat and calories on food labels. Choose “extra value” foods that contribute to your daily needs for calcium, iron, vitamins A and C, and fiber.
Greg Marr remembers the group of teenagers. It was summertime, and he was practicing his cross-country ski techniques on a pair of “roller skis,” which let skiers glide along pavement. “It’s smoother than snow-skiing,” says Marr, who is the editor of a popular magazine called Silent Sports, “but it hurts more when you fall.”
A group of teens stopped him to ask questions. “Are you in the Olympics?”
“No, no,” I said. “But I do some racing.”
“Do you win?”
“No, I’ve never won–I’m always back in the middle.”
And then they said, “Well, then, why do you do it?”
Let’s face it. When you think about sports, you think about competition and winning. And there’s nothing wrong with that. “Teenagers have a great competitive drive,” says Marr. “I don’t think that will ever change, and it’s a good thing.” Training and competing in a sport you love is a terrific route to lots of “personal bests”–to a strong heart, great bod, wide-awake brain, and an “I like me!” self-image.
But along the way to the track meet or the swim trials, we may have forgotten that the competition/win-lose model is not the only way to play.
“Team sports are wonderful,” says Marr. “But as you get on in life, most of those opportunities end.” That is where many of what he calls “silent sports” come into the picture: bicycling, backpacking, running, canoeing, and cross-country skiing among them. (more…)
